Too Late For Logic

Hello! It’s Beccy writing on behalf of the band. I can’t quite work out how to express my excitement as we build up to the release of Too Late For Logic, our debut album (Released 30th March). It’s been an incredible few years in the making, and it’s finally happening! If there’s a sound to encompass the general feeling amongst the four of us at the moment, it’s probably ‘WAWH!’.  That’s not quite a ‘wow’ of exuberance and not quite a satisfied ‘aah’ of relief, but something in between. A hybrid.

So it was with our heads, our hearts and our musical guts that we went into the studio, still as a seven-piece at that point, to record the songs we’ve been playing live for the past few years. Eleven in all. From the title track Too Late For Logic, which is the first song we ever penned as a band, to Eiderdown, the most recent, what we've ended up with a beautiful, elongated snapshot of the last two years of our musical lives as Sharks Took The Rest. And I think it's a corker. This will be the fourth album I've been involved in making, the first three being my solo albums. Not that it's a competition, but so far it's the one that's been on in the car the most out of all of them. I absolutely love it. If that sounds conceited, I couldn't give a monkeys: surely the point of making music is to make something that you yourself want to hear. It's about taking all that's been before and creating something that doesn't exist in the unique way you can splurge it out. Listening to it and loving it after it's been made feels pretty special and amazing. It's a bit like listening to the sounds inside your brain suddenly being played outside your brain.....I'm rambling now. Sorry.

So, yes. We headed over to Adam Sinclair’s house in Heaton, Newcastle, to lay down a lot of the stuff: strings, vocals, piano, guitar, bass were largely recorded there. Every so often we went on excursions for more rum and pizza, and to hunt for somewhere with bigger acoustics for things like drums. At times it got emotional.  The ‘time lapse’ of writing, performing and recording we’ve experienced as a band (through our own making, it has to be said) has resulted in quite a strange phenomenon: some of the lyrics had been written before some of the circumstances they were about had come into being. Almost like mini-prophecies. 

The best example of this is We Climbed As High As We Could. The song charts the break down of a relationship, and two people having tried their best at making it work but eventually it just can't go on, despite best efforts. The words were written when things were still going well in said relationship, then when it came to recording the song, it was with a cracked and heavy heart, post-break-up. That made for an interesting recording session! For me, it felt like dancing naked in a room full of friends who were waiting patiently on the sidelines, theirs eyes averted, holding out a warm robe. Many tissues and hugs. 

Other songs like Isobel also feel like they’ve ‘come true’ somehow. It’s a song about the unconditional love from a parent to their child, written a few years ago but now being released on the record in the very same year that Adam Sinclair, our drummer and producer, becomes a daddy. I suppose you can inject and shoe horn meaning into anything, but I do feel that songs often act as a bit of an emotional weather forecast. There’s a strong resonance between this record and our lives past, present and future, that makes it pretty special. We’re so proud to be releasing it. 

We feel like we’ve got so much to share with you and we’re looking forward to doing that on the tour we've got coming up. There are four dates, and we’re being joined by members of our 'chumrades in chamber-pop' (haha, noone in the band is going to thank me for writing that) Matt Stalker and Fables. They will be honorary Sharks for the duration of the tour, and there’s been quite a lot of ‘sex wee’ moments in rehearsals (that's an elegant phrase, I think you'll agree...a band favourite).
